With up to 4 graduate training intakes per year we have a virtually continuous requirement for graduates who want to distinguish themselves from their peers. For the past year I have been working in a major financial services business on a large migration project to move a portion of the existing mortgage book from a heritage Mainframe system onto another of the company’s platforms. My responsibilities included participation in all data mapping workshops, ensuring that all data required for new management reports was available from the target system and that the logic used to populate data on the target system matched that used on the existing database.

I also managed the management information teams in the conversion of several hundred existing reports, and the development of approximately thirty new reports, as a result of the migration.

I manage a SAS technical team working in financial services and I am responsible for the availability and operability of the SAS service to the organisation. My team’s role is the provision of SAS data to the business, delivery of new, and the maintenance of existing, SAS processes to internal customers, promotion of best practices, owning and managing the relationship between Group IT service delivery and IBM Application Maintenance and Support.

Over the last 10 months I have been involved with the generation of a new SAS architecture to support the company’s business intelligence needs for the next three years and in many cases this involved the design and implementation of new processes and procedures. In particular, the development of a new security model underlying the rollout of web-based reporting to virtually the whole organisation has resulted in an increase from around 120 to some 550 SAS users.

I completed the Advance programme seven years ago after completing a biomedical science M.Sc. The Advance Programme is a well structured and focused course, which prepares each candidate for working within a professional environment and covers all the fundamentals of SAS software as well as advanced techniques. The Advance Programme gave me an excellent foundation in the use of SAS software and prepared me for the challenges which lay ahead. The past seven years with Base 3 Systems have been the most enjoyable of my professional life; being both challenging and rewarding. After completing my first assignment for one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, I decided to pursue a consultancy role within Base 3 Systems. Since then I have worked for numerous clients each with their own unique technologies & environments. I have always felt an integral part of Base 3 Systems, and have always been nurtured by receiving first class training and support. Due to the nature of consultancy no one day is really the same as the next, which provides extremely varied and interesting roles. As my experience has grown; the roles which I have been assigned have also grown and diversified to the point where I was responsible for the technical design and implementation of an entire reporting strategy using the latest SAS Software products available, for the commercial credit card portfolio of one of most established and innovative credit card companies based within the UK.

The company seeks to recruit around 30 to 40 graduates a year, typically although not exclusively with a degree from a discipline demonstrating abilities in logic, analysis and mathematics.

New employees go through a nine week bespoke training programme designed to equip them with an excellent grounding in the skills required for subsequent deployment to a specific client. All training is done in-house using custom-built courses that teach not only the languages but also the techniques used in the real world of commercial systems development, and delivered by senior practitioners with a proven track record in both consultancy and training.
