GHG Emissions Report 2024

Base 3 Systems (Base 3) is a UK-based consultancy firm established in 1996, specialising in the use of SAS technology to deliver data-centric services to its clients across a number of industry sectors. The company is privately owned, and its operations are wholly desk-based. The company leases two office spaces in Ulverston, Cumbria, where a small number of staff are based. The majority of its consultancy services are however delivered by Base 3 personnel working at clients’ offices and utilising the clients’ infrastructure, hardware and software. Base 3’s Directors, along with staff working in the Administration, Finance and HR related functions, work remotely, and the company’s training activities are based in the Ulverston office. These training activities are limited to the training of the company’s employees and do not include public training courses, or the provision of classroom-based training for employees of Base 3’s clients at the Ulverston site. Base 3 does not own any property or company vehicles.

Organisational Boundaries

Base 3 has no associated or affiliated companies, no parent company or subsidiaries, and is not party to any joint ventures, partnerships or fixed asset investments.

Therefore the organisational boundaries for GHG emissions reporting have been defined using the control (both financial and operational) approach and are limited to Base 3 Systems Limited and its trading activities.

Operational Boundaries

Base 3 is committed to reporting all scope 1 and scope 2 emissions. At this time the company is unable to report on scope 3 emissions but is working on developing internal processes to capture and validate the necessary data to be able to monitor these emissions in future years. An analysis of the company’s activities has resulted in the identification of the following scope 3 categories as relevant:

  • Category 1 : Purchased goods and services
  • Category 6 : Business travel
  • Category 7 : Employee commuting

Base Year

Base 3 has selected 2018 (calendar year) as its base year due to (1) the availability of accurate and complete data for the reporting of scope 1 and scope 2 emissions in that year, and (2) it being the earliest year that is available from the SBTi target options for SMEs that we are selecting from.

Recalculation Policy

Base 3 does not anticipate having to perform a recalculation of its base year emissions due to acquisitions, divestments or changes/improvements in calculation methodology or data accuracy. However the company will continue to monitor any such changes and, based on the significance of the change, determine whether a recalculation is required. Should the company decide not to undertake a base year recalculation, this will be acknowledged within the relevant year’s report (and all subsequent reports) along with the nature of the change in order to ensure transparency.

Scope 1 Emissions

Base 3 does not generate any scope 1 emissions. The nature of the company’s business operations, as described at the start of this report, means that it does not undertake the types of activities (listed below) which are classed as generating scope 1 emissions:

  • Generation of electricity, heat, or steam
  • Physical or chemical processing
  • Transportation of materials, products, waste, and employees in company owned/controlled vehicles
  • Fugitive emissions

Scope 2 Emissions

Scope 2 emissions from the generation of purchased electricity have been calculated based on usage (see below) and the UK Government carbon conversion factors for grid electricity.

Electricity Usage

Data is sourced from monthly invoices submitted by the property landlord, detailing Base 3’s electricity consumption within the billing period (calendar month).

Variance versus Base Year

Base 3 has not identified any requirement to perform a recalculation of its base year emissions due to acquisitions, divestments or changes/improvements in calculation methodology or data accuracy. As a result of the company’s actions to reduce its energy consumption, the 2024 scope 2 emissions reported demonstrate a reduction of 99% against the base year value. Base 3 will continue to work towards further reducing these emissions.

Declaration

Emissions have been recorded and reported in accordance with the GHG Reporting Protocol Corporate Standard.
